December 31, 2012 Through Faith and Works We Receive Miracles

Dear Familia,

Well, this week has been really crazy. So I did have changes. President called the night of Christmas and said that I was leaving the next day (Wednesday). I was really sad. Especially because I would miss the baptisms of the 4 wonderful people, Hermana Elizabeth (who asked me to baptize her), Manuel (Elizabeth's son), Michael and Fabiola. This also didn't give me time to say goodbye to anyone. Oh well, I know that I was needed in my new area.

So, my new area is really close. It still is in the capitol, but it also is in a more rich area. I am in Los Llanitos, and in the zone Cuzcatlan. It is a pretty good area here. My new companion is Elder Defigueiredo, who is from California too. He is a good elder. We have been working really hard in this area, because they haven't had very much success for quite a while. However, through our Faith and through our Work, we have received Miracles. This was something that my Ward Mission Leader taught us ( me and Elder Leonardo) that Faith plus Works equals Miracles. I have truly seen this work. We have been receiving a lot of member references which has been great, because there haven't been very many investigators. The Lord has truly started to open the hearts of the people in my new area.

We have been teaching this guy whose name is Tony Claros. He is the craziest guy ever. At first I was wondering if he was drunk the first time we met him, but nope, it is just his personality. He is just really hyper and full of energy. He is a great guy and has a great desire to learn of the Gospel. We are also starting to teach the rest of his family which is going really well.

Well, we have two baptisms this Saturday which I am excited for. The two kids that are getting baptized are fantastic. They really know the things that they have been taught. The mom of the kids is a less active member, so we are reactivating her too.

Well, I have tried to get in touch with Carlos Rodriguez last night and this morning, but it won't let my call go through. So I thank you for giving me his home number, I will try to give him a call tonight and see if we can work something out. Unfortunately I am a lot further away than I was before. Oh well, we'll see what we can do.

Well, I love you guys so much and am grateful for everything. I honestly can feel your prayers. They have really helped me, especially with this change. I am truly grateful for my new companion though. I am grateful that he is a hard worker and that he is a gringo too. :) Anyway, well I love you guys and it was really good to see you guys on skype. If there is anything that I can do for you guys, let me know.

Love,

Elder Bryce Rodney Hales

Hey Mom,

I just had a few questions for you.  So, first off, could you send me the rest of the exercises for my hip. I only have stage 2.  I have been doing my exercises in the morning because, well, if you promise not to worry I will tell you.  My hip has been hurting and I have like purple streaks on both sides of my hip. I don't know what it means, but I am sure it isn't very good. Also, I was wondering if you could find me a scripture marking pencil like Matt's.  I got one in the MTC, but it was lost.  I have extra lead for it, but no pencil. Also, for dad's iphone, there is an awesome app that is free called Sky Map. It shows you all of the stars and constellations based on where you point the phone. It is really cool. Well, I think that this covers everything from my list of questions.

Thanks again for everything!

Love,

Elder Bryce Rodney Hales

Yo Ty,
Well, everything in El Salvador is going pretty good. That is awesome about the snow and that Colter comes home! I can't believe how fast the time goes by.

Well, bro, How was your Christmas? What'd you get? Anything cool, or just, ehh? "Look mom, I made a spaceship out of macaroni!" "Ehhh" Name the Movie! hahaha.

Well, bro, keep up the great work in school and learn to love to work, hard. Because that is all that you will be doing for two years. It is truly a blessing to have dad as a dad. To keep us in line and to learn the great principle of working hard.  Learn this Ty, and you will be a great missionary!  Also, keep up reading the Book of Mormon and Praying.  Everyday.  It is very important to have a strong testimony of these two priciples on the Mission.  Ask Matt, he will know.
Well, bro, I love you a ton, and will see you in a little less than a year.

Love,

Elder Bryce Rodney Hales

Elder Matthew Thomas Hales,

Como estas mi hermano? Well, this week has been really strange. I have had my first change. I am surprised at how sad it is to leave the people that you love and also a companion that you love too. Oh well, I know that the Lord needed me in this new area.
Well, that is great that you will talk to J soon. I know that you will do just fine and that the Spirit will direct you. Well, I was wondering if you could give me an explanation of how you did your street contacting. What are the most effective maneras and what you would recommend?   We have done a few street contacts, but mostly we have been trying to get references from members, which actually has been going really well, thanks to the Lord.

Yeah, my new area has been going through a really tough time. However, we are going to change that. We have already seen the miracles of the Lord through our works and faith, and I know that he will continue to bless the people here. The time has come for the people of Los Llanitos to awaken! Through the help of the Lord, this will be possible.

Well, if you have any good ideas or advice for what to do when you have changes, that would be great. Well, I love you bro and I hope that everything goes well.

Seamos Fieles, Pues!
Love,

Elder Bryce Rodney Hales

From Elder DeFigueiredo:

"We did have a ward Christmas party on Saturday the 29th. They asked us to prepare something, so Elder Hales and I whipped up a little improvisation really quick. He plays piano, so we prepared a little musical program to start out the dinner. He played, and I sang with my ward mission leader (he sings well, don't worry.) First, we sang "Away in a Manger," then Elder Hales played the hymn softly while I read Luke 2:8-14 and spoke about the Nativity. Then, we sang "Angels We Have Heard On High," and Elder Hales played "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" softly while I spoke about how we can honor Christ during this time of year. Then, we finished off the program singing "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful." It turned out super great, and a lot of the members said that it was the best part of the dinner."

"My new companion is Elder Hales from Ogden, Utah! Funny small-world fact: he went to the same high school as Elder Walker and knows him! Haha, who would have known? My only two gringo comps and they know each other. Anyway, Elder Hales has four months in the mission, and this is his second change in the field. That means that I'm finishing up the last three weeks of his training. He's super awesome, a super hard worker, he's full of faith, and he has a powerful spirit. In the five days that he has been here, we have gotten eight references from members. We've set super high goals, and we're just working like crazy to reach them. I'm super happy. He's always really happy and really willing to do whatever it takes to be successful. He's just an all-around really awesome guy. We'll take a good picture this week and I'll send it to you on Monday."
