February 28, 2013 TOSH

It has been quite a ride the last 6 weeks, but we feel that we have found the best answer in helping Bryce. Bryce and I went to Salt Lake to The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (TOSH) and visited with Dr Hugh West. He has determined (along with several others) that Bryce has Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) in both hips. His right hip is feeling worse than the left due to a torn labrum. After our visits with the doctor and physical therapists, we feel that having surgery on his hips is what needs to be done. However, we are looking at a full year after surgery until he has a complete recovery. (I will keep you posted on the recovery when the time comes.)

I have attached pictures to help you understand a little bit about what Bryce is dealing with. On the second image, it shows a picture of a hip with the 'pincer' and a hip with a 'cam' highlighted in red.

On Wednesday, we were sent to have a CT scan of Bryce's hips. This turned out to be quite amazing- in that the scan was in 3-D so we could see every angle of his hip/pelvis structure. (Modern Technology amazes me!) I also want to mention that Wednesday, we were greeted with very nice receptionists and had an overall great experience with all we met with. The CT scan views show that Bryce has both types of impingement on both hips, meaning that the pincer of both hips is abnormal, much like the image attached and that his cam is also abnormal, thus producing bone rubbing on bone. All of Bryce's symptoms are in accordance with his diagnosis. The right hip is more severe, due to the fact that the pincer torn the labrum. (There is a picture of the labrum in the first image I attached.) The inside of both of his joints appears to have adequate cartilage and spacing and the surgery will not affect that area. The FAI is something he has had throughout his life. Only now, has it become a problem. Without surgery, we are looking at more wear and tear on the labrum and cartilage.

This morning after our visit with the physical therapist/assistant to Dr West, we felt really good about our decision to go ahead with the surgery. Dr West will scrape away the over-growth of the bone on both the pincer and the cam and then reattach the labrum by sewing it to the bone. Bryce is not looking forward to the recovery and physical therapy afterward, but knows that this is what needs to be done. We have gained a lot of knowledge about how the body works and have felt blessed as we continue on our journey.

As we were driving home Bryce and I were talking about why this is now showing up. Why did it not manifest earlier in his life? Then Bryce said, "Maybe it was because the Lord needed me in El Salvador and I wouldn't have been able to go there had it shown up earlier in my life." This reconfirmed to me that the Lord has a plan for us! Sometimes I think about all the times we have been placed in a situation to either learn from someone, or to help someone in need and I am reminded of that wonderful plan He has for us. We don't always know what that plan is, but we must keep moving forward with faith. When we move forward with faith, our future is bright.

Thank you once again for the prayers, thoughts and for your support and love. We are so grateful for all of you and hope that you are feeling blessed in your life as well.

Side notes:

When we told Tyler we were going in for a CT scan (pronounced 'cat' scan) he asked if they were going to find out if Bryce was allergic to cats. =)

Bryce can hardly wait to do wheelie's in the wheel chair. He already tried and it was really painful, so he said he will wait.

Bryce can hardly wait to cuddle up and hold Gracie again. When we took him to the MTC, she wrapped her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist so tight that he had to have help getting her pulled away.

Bryce and I are grateful that we both took our CNA class together, as this will come in handy in the near future.

Bryce is grateful for the medical classes he enrolled in to help his understanding of what is happening.

We are grateful that we get to work one on one with our Bishop! =) Thank you Tom for being so great!

I'm grateful that I type these updates- this keeps my journal writing up to date. =)
